Our Top Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work could seem more like an arduous scholarly challenge than the latest pop project by an artist who just had a last hit featured an international K-pop star. Split into four distinct parts and voiced in thirteen tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic work that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, frequently by way of the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in avoid overly academic posturing is almost a miracle, with sole credit belonging to Rosalía. While this is not her first project to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its scale are far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she's tearing hearts apart, the listener still desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly during the stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in with comedic impact. The song then shifts into the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—nor wish to predict—where you will go to next."

Almost each track finishes in a completely different point from how it started. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic style begins out dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Between Art & Pop

A key achievement of Lux is navigating the line of radical innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. That trick is echoed by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes patience to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast at which the characters at it, some intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
